High school bowling matches are divided into two sets of competition. The first is an individual head-to-head competition, for which coaches assign their five starters. The individual matches consist of a two-game series. The second part of each high school match — which usually draws more intrigue and excitement — is known as Baker Format. It is a four-game series in which each bowler on a team bowls two frames per game, going up in a "lineup".

Team points are earned in each of the individual games (1 pt for individual series and 2 pts for team total series and Baker Format games 2 pts per team game and 2 pts for team series), for a total of 17 pts. The team with the most points or the first team to reach 9 pts wins the match.
